Hollow Roots

★★★★★ 4.7 Editor rating

Hollow Roots is quiet and strange in the best way. You climb down into a forgotten network of tunnels and let curiosity guide you, uncovering little stories told through murals, abandoned camps and the odd scrap of journal. There's no map handed to you, which makes every discovery feel earned.

Movement is a simple virtual stick with context buttons that appear only when needed, keeping the screen clean. We rarely felt lost in the control sense, even if we were often pleasantly lost in the world.

Performance is smooth and the dark palette is kind to battery life. It's a slow game, a thinking-and-looking game, and we kept coming back to it before sleep.
